Amnesia is one of the most famous clubs in the World.
Head out of Ibiza town towards San Antonio direction and you’ll see a fortress, a magnificent old finca. This is Amnesia; Ibiza’s first disco. You can’t miss it. It all started back in the 1970’s, when the owner bought the land for just four million pesetas. Nowadays it’s the favourite club for the people who live on the island or the “Ibicencos” as they are called. The club is always full whether the tourists arrive or not.
Amnesia has always had a reputation as “being there” for the people. On the night of the millennium, all the other clubs on the island announced their prices well in advance. Most charged around 10,000 pesetas per head. Amnesia advertised that anyone who lived on the island could get in for free. The place was jammed. It was one of the most memorable nights in Ibiza’s clubbing history. Nobody can remember what time they finally shut on New Years Day.
It was mainly an outdoor club in the old days, but bits and pieces have been added over the years to expand capacity and satisfy demand. Ownership has also changed hands a number of times. Nowadays, the terrace is covered, soundproofed and probably bigger than any nightclub in the UK. And this is just the terrace! Outside they normally play old skool tunes and Latin classics. In the main room you’ll get harder house tunes, often with a Spanish influence.
Amnesia is massive. Be sure to get there early, as the car park fills up quickly after 3am in the morning so you might end up having to park quite a bit away.
