San Antonio is the second largest town on the Island. It was originally called Portus Magnus. The full name for the town is “Sant Antoni de Portmany”.
It’s still recovering from the sleazy reputation it was given by various forms of media. Remember Ibiza uncovered? Back in the early days, San Antonio was the main tourist spot on the Island. It was a lot more open and permissive than the other towns. In most other towns you would be encouraged to cover up exposed flesh even during the summer months. Dancing was discouraged too.
Back in the golden days, San Antonio was the place to be. It was almost like the San Tropez of the Balearics. This was where you’d find the finest restaurants and bars and meet the wealthy yacht owners who have their crafts moored in the Ibiza’s stunning bay.
Nowadays, during peak season, it’s full of young people out partying, going clubbing and drinking. It gets completely packed during July and August, and can be a bit intense. San Antonio is home to the world famous Café del Mar and the excellent Es Paradis club.
Out of season, it’s more family orientated and relaxed. There’s a wide range of entertainment available for families here. It’s not just clubs and booze. There are many beautiful beaches to choose from and all just a short car or ferry ride away. |
